The Best Coast
There’s something slightly different about the other side of the US.
Palm trees line the streets and cars line up around In’N’Out Burger. Green plus signs glow in the dark (what are those?) and celebrities are walking amongst mortals. There’s a haze that sets around the city at sunset, like a blanket of what I can only assume is pollution.
But it’s just so great. All of it.
I made my way to the west coast in early march to meet my new work team at my job’s HQ in Santa Clarita. Slight shifts in our structure had me working with new people and clients and being able to put a face to an email signature or a slack chat is something that is so beneficial, it’s hard to put a monetary value on it. We spent the week, Sunday to Sunday, in the golden state, making the most of our time in this newly discover land.
First thing you should know, LA traffic is something else. The photos of the 405 looking like a mall parking lot on black friday is not photoshop. It’s real life and it is absolutely fucking nuts. However, for some magical reason, we never experienced that. We flew to Santa Monica (NY driving?) in 40 minutes after work, got to Griffith Observatory in under an hour later in the week, and got to Hollywood with enough time to spare to take a few shots in front of the Comedy Store’s sign with daylight. Explaining to coworkers the next day of our previous night’s adventures had them categorize us as liars.
We finished the week up north in Sequoia National Park which was the highlight of the week. Only two days were spent amonsgst the redwoods but it’s just unreal. We have big trees here on the east coast, but these are big trees.
It truly is a gorgeous city and I’m hoping to make the trip again soon.
